Getting an estimate for a hard dodger
Here I am during the process of designing and getting an estimate for a hard dodger. Our open cockpit has been a point of discussion regarding safety and exposure to the elements since she was purchased (she, meaning the sailboat). A dodger is either made out of canvas or is constructed from hard materials designed to partially enclose the cockpit area. A soft or canvas dodger has steel or aluminum poles to hold it up and the fabric is stretched over those poles making a cover and sides, if grabbed as a place to hold on, does not provide adequate support. We have decided that since most special needs guests aboard will not be familiar with our sailboat and might have never even sailed, a rigid (hard) dodger is called for. This is not our first estimate but Chris has been the first to be someone we can help with the construction so that we can bring the cost down. We should know more next week!
